New Laser for Cataract Surgery

Dalcross Adventist Hospital is delighted to announce its recent purchase of one of the first Femtosecond Laser’s for cataract surgery in Australia and the first in an Australian university teaching hospital. With only 6 of these lasers currently in operation outside the USA, providing this service to Australian patients and ophthalmologists reaffirms Dalcross Eye Centre as a national leader in Ophthalmology Services.

This new technology uses a computer guided Femtosecond laser to perform the early stages of the cataract operation, cutting the tissues with a degree of precision impossible to match with manual techniques. Femtosecond laser technology has already been well proven in Refractive Laser Eye Surgery over the last 10 years with over 1 million procedures performed. The LenSx Femtosecond Laser is based on this technology and is now available with FDA and TGA approval for cataract surgery.

Overseas clinical data indicates improved patient outcomes attributable to more precise incisions and lens positioning and better control of astigmatism. Further, patient safety is improved by reducing energy usage and intraoperative time, resulting in a gentler procedure with potentially quicker visual recovery and a greater chance of reduced dependence on glasses.

Dalcross Adventist Hospital is currently performing an extensive credentialing process for accredited surgeons performing LenSx Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery and welcome new surgeons interested in providing the latest development in cataract surgery. We are very pleased to be able to offer this new technology to your patients and believe that it is the next step forward in the evolution of cataract surgery and potentially, will become the “Gold Standard” of care.

More information regarding this innovative new technology and Dalcross Eye Centre is detailed in the attached brochure. Educational seminars to keep you informed of the progression of this exciting development in cataract surgery will be held in the coming months.

If you are a specialist and have any questions, or would like to discuss the potential benefits or suitability of this technology for your patients, please contact our Theatre Manager, Kerrie Legg on 9932 6623 or email kerrielegg@dalcross.com.

For other enquiries please see our Eye Centre information or contact the Dalcross Eye Centre on 9932 6600.

Australian First at Dalcross Adventist Hospital

The EOS Imager will change the way orthopaedic and spinal patients are diagnosed and treated. It will have implications for patients with back pain, hip and knee problems – where vertical weight bearing images of bones are helpful. It has significant implications for children with paediatric scoliosis.

Significantly, the EOS:

  • Results in up to 9 times less radiation dose (significant less radiation risk)
  • Takes only 10-20 seconds for a scan (patients stand in a booth)
  • Provides amazing images of full size standing weight bearing patients (Drs now have one continuous digital image and  can now see weight-bearing impact on patients; piecing together of multiple individual x-rays no longer required)
  • Provides geometrically accurate pictures (allowing true length and angle measurements; x-ray has geometric distortion)
  • Views images in real time (quicker diagnosis)
  • Changes the way conditions including paediatric scoliosis is monitored (allows regular monitoring of curvature changes that might require urgent intervention)
  • Gives better clarity of images (can result in better diagnosis/better view of spinal alignment/potentially less repeat surgery)
  • Enables potentially treatment transforming research into spinal anatomy
  • Is Nobel Prize winning technology

Orthopaedic spine surgeon Dr Davor Saravanja, who operates at Dalcross Adventist Hospital and Sydney Children’s Hospitals and completed the revered Vancouver Spine Program Fellowship in 2008-09, spoke at the media conference in regards to the implications – particularly for paediatric scoliosis.

World renowned spinal surgery pioneer Dr Bill Sears, who has done over 5,000 spinal surgeries, spoke in regards to the implications for patients with degenerative back and sagittal balance issues.
