Dalcross Eye Centre |
Dalcross Eye Centre provides a comprehensive range of inpatient and day patient ophthalmic services. Our facility has sophisticated, state-of-the-art equipment to ensure that the very best technology is available. The Centre offers all the advantages of a day surgery centre as well as the convenience of a modern acute hospital, which ensures safe and comfortable treatment for patients. Our ophthalmic nursing staff are specially trained and highly skilled. Our team is dedicated to providing you with high quality care to achieve the best outcomes.
New Femtosecond Laser
Dalcross Adventist Hospital has recently purchased of one of the first Femtosecond Laser’s for cataract surgery in Australia and the first in an Australian university teaching hospital. With only 6 of these lasers currently in operation outside the USA, providing this service to Australian patients and ophthalmologists reaffirms Dalcross Eye Centre as a national leader in Ophthalmology Services.
This new technology uses a computer guided Femtosecond laser to perform the early stages of the cataract operation, cutting the tissues with a degree of precision impossible to match with manual techniques. Femtosecond laser technology has already been well proven in Refractive Laser Eye Surgery over the last 10 years with over 1 million procedures performed.
Importantly, patient safety is improved by reducing energy usage and intraoperative time within the eye, resulting in a gentler procedure with potentially quicker visual recovery and a greater chance of reduced dependence on glasses.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the benefits of having Day Surgery?
The major advantages are a minimal disruption to your routine, and the opportunity to recover at home. Certain procedures still require an overnight stay. Dalcross Eye Centre offers both. For certain procedures your Health Fund may only fund a day only admission.
Does Day Surgery mean the procedure is only minor?
No. The vast majority of eye surgery is now performed in a day surgery setting. The development of new surgical techniques and advances in anaesthesia have resulted in a rapid recovery for patients from procedures. The outcome of surgery is also significantly better and surgeons are able to offer new solutions for problems previously regarded as inoperable.
When do I go home?
When you have fully recovered from your anaesthesia, you will be offered some light refreshments. Day patients (mostly cataract procedures) will be discharged home with a relative or friend, when they feel completely comfortable. Overnight patients will be transferred to their overnight ward accommodation. All patients will be given advice and details of their post operative instructions when they are discharged to home. During the first week after surgery, one of our nurses will phone to check on your recovery and well-being. If you have any concerns or questions about your eye condition, please contact your ophthalmologist.
Where do I find more information on my condition?
Your doctor is the best source of information. A variety of leaflets on specific conditions are also available. For more information on your condition, visit your surgeon or the Centre. Dalcross Eye Centre is also able to provide video information.
What if I become ill?
Should you develop a red eye, cough, cold or any other signs of illness, please contact your doctor and the Centre as your surgery may need to be postponed. |
